Enjoy a homemade version of the classic Chinese dish that captures all the flavor without needing takeout. This quick and easy recipe features tender beef, crisp broccoli, and a savory sauce, making it a perfect weeknight meal.
Slice the beef across the grain into ¼ inch thick strips and place them in a non-metallic bowl.
Sprinkle the beef with baking soda and mix well to coat it evenly. Set aside for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry to remove excess baking soda.
In a small jug, combine ⅓ cup water and cornstarch, stirring to mix well.
Add in the oyster sauce, light brown sugar, cooking wine, sesame oil, hoisin sauce, and black pepper. Set this sauce mixture aside for later use.
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add ¼ cup boiling water.
Steam the broccoli florets for about 2 minutes until they are bright green and tender-crisp. Once done, transfer the broccoli to a plate and set aside.
Cook the Beef
Wipe the skillet clean and return it to high heat.
Add vegetable oil and let it heat until shimmering.
Once hot, add the beef in a single layer and cook for 1 minute until browned. Return the broccoli to the skillet with the beef.
Add Aromatics and Sauce
Stir in the sliced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for just a minute to release their flavors.
Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet, bringing it to a simmer.
Cook for 1 minute or until the sauce thickens slightly, coating the beef and broccoli.
Serve
Serve the dish immediately, garnished with toasted sesame seeds for added texture and flavor.
Enjoy warm alongside steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.
Notes
Use baking soda carefully and rinse it off thoroughly.
Customize your vegetables according to your taste and ensure the skillet is hot before adding the beef for the best texture.
